DAY ATTRACTIONS
11 Sat 02 Sep 2017 Auckland - Sydney NZ 705 13:35 - 17:10
a Dr William Pickering - NZ Space Pioneer based in NASA
b Richie McCAW - NZ Rugby Captain 2004-2015
c Solo surfing around South Island in winter
We left the Waldorf Apartments at 10:00 and delivered the car back to Alamo Car Hire who took us
to the airport around 11:00 where we booked in our luggage in for the flight at 15:35
This gave us time to review the places that we had visited and use the Airport Wifi to update the
Blog
We had a coffee and then around 12:30 a very inexpensive NZ$ 17.50 Thai meal each at the airport
At 14:00 we board the Airbus 320 plane for take-off
The individual flight viewing program was extensive and while I read, Steve viewed the following
movies that he thought would be of interest
a William Pickering 1910-2004 - the leading New Zealand Space Pioneer
"Many will have heard of about New Zealanders like Sir Edmund Hillary (1919-2008) conquering
Mount Everest in 1953 and atom splitter Sir Earnest Rutherford (1871-1837) splitting the atom in
1917.
Movie maker Peter Jackson (maker of Lord of the Rings Triolgy ) has shown that from small beginnings, with
enough determination, anyone in New Zealand can make it to the top of their profession.
There is one other historic achievement that seems to have gone unnoticed in our school
curriculum resources ...that of the work of Dr Sir William Pickering (1910-2004) .
He played a major role in conquering space - the "final frontier".
It was a New Zealander who brought the unimaginably distant planets within our reach"
This was a truly remarkable portrayal of Dr PICKERING with comments from Buzz ALDRIN American
astronaut and the second man to walk on the moon after Neil ARMSTRONG on 20 Jul 1969
There is a photograph of Bill PICKERING with James VAN ALLEN (Discoverer of the Van Allen
Radiation Belts ) and Wernher Von BRAUN (German V2Rocket Developer) hoisting a model of
Explorer 1 after it became the 1st American satellite to orbit earth in 1958
b Richie McCAW - Chasing Great NZ Rugby Captain 2004-2015 with 148 Test Caps
This was a movie about the life of Richie McCAW the New Zealand Rugby player 2001-2015 and the
winning culture he help to create in the NZ National side
The film records his life as a Rugby player from about 11 years old, videos of the teams he played for
Including his first game as an All Black against Ireland in 2001 when he was Man of the Match in his
first game and his ambition to become a G.A.B. - "Great All Black"
Well he certainly did that but other interesting aspects of his life include his family and the support he
received from them and how he became a helicopter pilot and glider pilot
Well worth seeing for any sportsperson !!
c Canadian Girl solo surfing around South Island in Winter
This was a documentary about the brilliant surfing conditions and scenery in South Island as this
Canadian female film maker travelled around surfing as a solo surfer in winter
Amazing courage to surf alone in beautiful but deserted beaches around South Island - really
generated an ambition to visit South Island in the near future
We landed at 16:45 and we back home by 17:30 after a brilliant holiday at North Island's Bay of
Islands in New Zealand
