c ArtZone - Art Galleries around New Zealand
As today was the happy hour meeting at 16:30 of the Paihia Resort Timeshare members and a
dinner at the Waterfront Restaurant we decided not to travel too far
The first project was to book a room in Auckland for the final evening on Fri 01 Sep 2017 so we used
the internet to book the Waldorf Tetra Serviced apartment at NZ$117.00
Once this had been completed we filled up with petrol and headed down Highway 10 and then
Highway 12 to Kohukohu
There was much to view with different landscapes of woods and hilltops with farms with different
types of cattle and sheep
Kohukohu is a historic village on the Hokianga Harbour in the Northland Region of North Island.
It was one of the first European settlements in New Zealand.
Kohukohu is situated on the northern shore of the harbour where it splits into two rivers, the
Mangamuka River branching inland to the northeast and the Waihou River leading towards the east
past Mangungu Mission, Horeke and Rangiahua.
Where the harbour divides there is a small island called Motiti which was painted by Augustus Earle,
the first European artist to spend several months in New Zealand, during his visit to the Hokianga in
1827. He wrote
"we were sailing up a spacious sheet of water, which became considerably wider after entering
it; while majestic hills rose on each side .... looking up the river we beheld various headlands
stretching into the water and gradually contracting its width, 'till they became fainter and fainter
in the distance and all was lost in the azure of the horizon".
At Kohukohu there was a large tranquil lake with a jetty of about 100 meters into the lake
It was very quiet and we had a sandwich and coffee at the local café before walking into the Village
Arts shop and the Art gallery and meeting with Sally
Sally explained there were many people who called themselves artists around Kohukohu and there
was a strong Arts Community
We purchased a booklet called "ArtZone" which listed about 80 New Zealand artists and around 145
Art Galleries with 7 maps of the Galleries in the major cities and towns of Auckland (Newtown & City,
Newmarket & Parnell), Wellington, Christchurch & Dunedin
We were going to drive to the car ferry and travel across to Rawene but Sally said the car ferry was
under repair for the next 3 weeks so we returned to Paihia, arriving at 4pm
At 5pm we attended the Happy Hour meeting and found about 20 other Time share members having
drinks and canapés
This finished around 6pm and we walked to the Waterfront Apartments where we discovered that
the Waterfront Restaurant was 5 mins down the road in the opposite direction!
We had an excellent meal at the restaurant and listened to the tales of Jack and Joan Edwards.
Jack was a retired (blind) phosphate engineer with 3 sons and 1 daughter and had lived at many
places around the world for his company
