CARLINE DUFFY TRAVEL BLOG - DAY 6

TRIP TO BAY OF ISLANDS NEW ZEALAND - 23 Aug 2017 to 02 Sep 2017

				DAY ATTRACTIONS

				06	Monn 28 Sep 2017 Paihia - Cape Reinga
						a	Cape Reinga Lighthouse
b	Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes
						c	90-Mile Beach

In the morning we had to phone Auckland airport 0011-64-9-357-3000 to book our suitcase onto the
flight as Air New Zealand had generously waived the costs on the way out

This proved time consuming and cost $ 55.00. We spoke with Polly and booked our seats 17E & F
back to Sydney on the A320

We finally left around midday for Cape Reinga and along the coast road (highway 10) to Doubtless
Bay , Coopers Beach and Mangonui on a cloudy day

There were a mixture of sheep and cattle farms, not to mention turkeys, pigs and Carline even
sighted an emu amongst them!

We were delayed for about 30 minutes following a herd of cattle on the road being moved from one
pasture to another with the shepherd on a tractor and 5 dogs herding the cattle along
the road

We arrived at Cape Reinga at 16:30 and spent an hour walking down to the lighthouse and observing
where the Pacific Ocean and Tasman Sea met with waves crashing together from the East and the
West

The weather had cleared up and there were a number of people coming to photograph the sunset
with very sophisticated camera equipment

There was a signpost showing the distance of many international cities and landmarks. Took some
great photos.

We decided not to wait for the sunset at 18:08 as it was a long drive back to Paihia

Most of it was in the dark along a winding mountain road before we finally arrived back at the
resort at 21:30 for a very late dinner at the apartment and we regret not being able to visit
the Te Paki Sand Dunes and 90-mile Beach

Talking with the other members of Club Paigia we then understood why the Coach Tours left
at 07.00 in the morning to fit it all in 1 day
